The city of Xi'an
Xi'an is the provincial capital of Shaanxi province. It was once the capital of China. Xi'an is the easternmost end point of the Silk Route and is situated on the Wei he river. In earlier times it was called Chang'an, which means 'heavenly peace'. During the Tang Dynasty it was the capital of China with a population of around 1 million inhabitants, on a surface area of 84km2, which made it undoubtedly the largest city on earth at the time.
The population is now around 6 million inhabitants, which rises to 9,5 million if you include the surrounding area with the city of Xianjang, which falls under the jurisdiction of Xi'an. Partly as a result of the Silk Route Xi'an has a large muslim neighbourhood which is also home to the 1250 year old Large Mosque of Xi'an.
The city is at the heart of the origins of Chinese civilisation. The Qin Dynasty, the first dynasty to unite China, had its capital city nearby. The grave of the Emperor Qin Shi Huangdi with its Terracotta Army can be found close to the city.
