The city of Maastricht
The Romans used a natural crossing place over the Maas to connect the roads between the North Sea coast and Cologne. They named that place Mosam ad Trajectum, now known as Maastricht. Because of its position the city has for centuries been of strategic importance for the many armies to have fought each other in Western Europe. Maastricht is also considered important from religious and cultural points of view.
Many traces of the old city can still be seen in the Maastricht of today: defences, churches, squares and villas, which go someway to define the atmosphere of the city. After the separation of Belgium Maastricht became Dutch territory and the ceramic industry in particular grew strongly.
Maastricht is now a university city of 120,000 inhabitants. The European Union met here twice and the decision to introduce the Euro was taken here.
Maastricht has many faces. The historic centre with its Vrijthof and Onze Lieve Vrouwplein and surrounded by lovely old streets is the main attraction.
On the other side of the Maas the Wijck neighbourhood of the city has risen in prominence due to the easy access from the station to the historic centre and the direct connection to the prestigious Ceramique site.
Maastricht is praised for its lively atmosphere, the joie de vivre to be seen in the attractive shops and enormous diversity of restaurants, from simple to Michelin star standard. Add to this the many terraces and extensive cultural life and it is clear: Maastricht is a city where there is always something new to experience.
